Gateway Installation and Setup

Overview

This documentation is provided as a supplement to the Gateway Installation Manual.

Gateway Equipment

When you receive your Gateway shipment, verify the following items are included:

  • Gateway 50, 60, 70, 75, 80 or 100 Legacy Protocol to Ethernet Protocol Converter Device
  • Installation Manual
  • Gateway Configuration diskette (contains the configuration program, application program, and the async transfer program)
  • Optional interface adapter
    • G50 Adapter (DTE interface for Gateway 50, 60, 70, 75 and 100 serial ports)
    • G1000FR-DCE adapter (Gateway 80 and 100 WAN ports)

Configuration Program (self-extracting)

  1. Install the Version 4.0 Configuration Program (JS0405###.EXE) on a DOS compatible PC.
  2. Important: Unless otherwise instructed, use only the configuration program's default path and filenames at the root directory of the PC that will be used to develop and load configurations onto the Gateway Unit. In order to retain the integrity of all JBM programs and ensure the proper functioning of the Gateway Unit(s), default folders and filenames will automatically be extracted from the configuration program executable as JBMGATEW.

Note: Any renaming, moving or deleting of default directories and filenames will cause loading errors and sometimes fatal application errors that may result in lost or corrupted files. Please contact us before you change or modify the default locations of these or other JBM files and/or software.

  3. Type SETUP at the \JBMGATEW prompt.
  4. Enter the default User ID and Password, "gateway", to enter the configuration program. This password must be entered in lowercase, as the entry fields are case sensitive.

Configuring the Gateway

The Gateway is configured through a series of options. Each option defines part of the unit's parameters. Select Unit Configuration -->New to start making a new configuration.

Important: Always use the F10/F12 (save screen information) key when backing out of screens that were previously entered. This step will be critical after every screen is entered. Also, the user must enter every parameter field in red text, otherwise, certain files will not be written to, and the configuration will not be saved and/or recovered once completed. Certain versions of Windows NT require you to use F10 to save and back out of screens.

To configure the Gateway, follow these procedures:

  1. Define the physical characteristics for the first port, usually the serial port.
  2. Define the protocol characteristics for the devices attached to the serial port.
  3. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the remaining port(s), usually the Ethernet port.
  4. Define the routing between individual addresses for each port.
  5. Save and Transfer the Configuration File:
  6. Once the routing information is entered correctly, you have completed the configuration setup. Use the F10/F12 key until you reach the screen that has a File: option near the bottom of the screen. Once File: is selected, you should select Save and Exit or Save As if you would like to rename a previously saved configuration. (The latter option is typically used during testing when slight changes are made to the configuration.)

  7. Choose the menu option Transfer Mode - File. Select the Unit Configuration that will be loaded onto the Gateway.
  8. Do not change the path or filename unless otherwise instructed by a JBM Customer Representative. Check the jbmgatew\Jbmgw50 subdirectory to make sure that this particular file has an updated time/date stamp.

  9. Move the Transfer file to the Gateway using one of the following methods:
    • Async through an async serial or Console port
    • TFTP file transfer through an Ethernet or Token Ring Port

The Gateway Installation Manual provides more information about the protocol, the configuration process, and transfer file procedures.

Loading Configurations/Applications onto the Gateway

Either the BootP/TFTP or Async Transfer Program can be used to load JBM configurations and/or applications onto the Gateway. Installation and procedural steps have been provided here. Please follow each of the steps accordingly before calling JBM for support.

Using BootP/TFTP

The following instructions are for the JBM supplied programs that run with Windows Operating Systems.

  1. Make a subdirectory called Bootp, so that you have \Jbmgatew\Bootp.
  2. Execute the BOOTPW.EXE self-extracting executable.  You will be asked to unzip/extract the files into a directory.  Type in C:\Jbmgatew\bootp.   This will unzip three files: the Bootp Server, the Bootp Table, and the Bootp Log.
  3. Make the appropriate IP address/physical address changes to BOOTPTAB.TXT. The following are examples of the BOOTPTAB.TXT entries:

      gw50:ht=ethernet:ha=0060DA0001CE:ip=192.10.10.50:hd=\jbmgatew\jbmgw50: sm=255.255.255.0:
      gw80:ht=ethernet:ha=0060DA00027F:ip=192.10.10.80:hd=\jbmgatew\jbmgw50: sm=255.255.255.0:
      gw70:ht=ethernet:ha=0060DA000280:ip=192.10.10.70:hd=\jbmgatew\jbmgw50: sm=255.255.255.0:
  4.
  5. Execute the TFTPd.EXE self-extracting executable.  You will be asked to unzip/extract the files into a directory.  Type in C:\Jbmgatew\bootp.  (This extraction will unzip two files: the tftpd32 server and a help file.)
  6. Once the files are extracted, rename the tftpd32.exe file to tftp.exe.
  7. Start the TFTPd32 SERVER by executing tftp.exe or by executing boopd.exe.
  8. Verify that the IP Address that is displayed coincides with your PC's ethernet/LAN interface.  (Note: PC's that are enabling two ethernet cards may not work with this TFTP Server, you may have to disable the other ethernet interface.)
  9. Go to Settings, change the Base Directory to C:/Jbmgatew/Jbmgw50 (Unix Format with forward delimiters).
  10. Go to Security, select None.
  11. Advanced Options should be set as follows:
      - No Option Negotiation
      - Set Translate Unix File Names to No (do not mark the check box)
      - Show Progress Bar (Mark the check box)
      - Activate TFTPd32 on this interface (Mark the check box)
  12. The Base Directory of the Server should be showing as C:\Jbmgatew\Jbmgw50 (DOS Format with backwards delimiters). The Base Directories will be showing different slashes, this is not an error and should be used as instructed in this documentation.
  13. Execute the BootP Server if you have not already done so. Set the Options' Messages to "Debug Mode".
  14. Reset the Gateway (hold the reset button in for 30 seconds).
  15. A successful configuration load will be reported as follows:
Connection received from 192.10.20.130 on port 1027
Read request for file <\jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.cfg>. Mode octet
      \jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.cfg>: sent 3 blks, 1003 bytes in 0 s. 0 blk resent

Loading Modified Configurations (Using Telnet):

  1. Make your changes to the configuration and select Transfer Mode - File. This will overwrite the Jbmgw50.cfg file that was previously loaded onto the Gateway. Check the Time/Date and File Size to verify the correct file has been loaded. Open a Telnet session with the Gateway.
  2. Enter in User Name and Password; by typing any character.
  3. Type Show at the Telnet prompt.
  4. Use the Telnet commands to set the IP addresses in the Telnet Session.
  5. Leave the File fields empty.
  6. Type change conf load enabled.
  7. Type Show Conf to confirm that the flag has been set to enabled.
  8. Wait about 10 to 20 seconds to telnet back into the Gateway (once it has been reset) to verify the Disabled flag has been set.
  9. A successful configuration load will be reported as follows:
    • Connection received from 192.10.20.130 on port 1027
Read request for file <\jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.cfg>. Mode octet
      <\jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.cfg>: sent 3 blks, 1056 bytes in 0 s. 0 blk resent
  10. Wait about 10-15 seconds, Telnet back into the Gateway, using the new IP Address. Verify theconf load flag is set to Disabled.

Loading Applications:

The Gateway is programmed to send out BootP requests through a Boot Program which allows for the immediate loading of a configuration or an application. If the Gateway undergoes a "full reset", it can request a new application and configuration. For more information on this procedure, please see the Troubleshooting Section.

Important: Before loading an application onto the Gateway, using any of the following methods, you must extract the JBMGW50.BIN from the JG5040##.EXE that was provided on the JBM Configurator diskette or supplied by your JBM Electonics Representative. Use of Telnet commands will allow an application upgrade with no effect on the configuration that is currently loaded onto the Gateway.

  1. The Boot Telnet commands only pertain to information used when attempting an application upgrade or reload.
  2. Each boot/app IP addresses and previously mentioned flag settings must be entered correctly in the Telnet session.
  3. Type change boot app load enabled at the Telnet prompt.
  4. Type reset. The Telnet session will be terminated. Open the TFTPd Server to view the status of the application loading.
  5. At this point, the Gateway will start loading a new application. The TFTP Server a file transfer progress bar which will increment as the new application is loading. If this is not the case, check your steps and retry the File Transfer.

Once the process is complete, application load should be reported as follows:

Connection received from 192.10.20.130 on port 1027
Read request for file <\jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.bin>. Mode octet
      <\Jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.bin>: sent 1046 blks, 535535 bytes in 3 s. 0 blk resent.

  6. Telnet back into the Gateway to confirm that the change boot app load enabled flag has been changed to disabled. If it has been changed, a new application has loaded onto the Gateway.
  7. Once the process is complete, application load should be reported as follows:

Connection received from 192.10.20.130 on port 1027
Read request for file <\jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.bin>. Mode octet
      \Jbmgatew\jbmgw50\jbmgw50.bin>: sent 1046 blks, 535535 bytes in 3 s. 0 blk resent.
  8. Telnet back into the Gateway to confirm that the change boot app load enabled flag has been changed to disabled. If it has been changed, a new application has loaded onto the Gateway.

ASYLOAD.EXE (Async Transfer Program)

This program should only be run in an DOS Format.

Loading Configurations:

  1. Save the configuration and do the Transfer Mode File. This will make a file called jbmgw50.cfg This is the configuration that gets loaded onto the unit via the ASYLOAD.EXE program.
  2. Check the Jbmgatew\Jbmgw50 subdirectory to make sure that this particular file has an updated time/date stamp.
  3. Connect a Straight RS232 cable from the working Communications Port typically Comm 1 or Comm 2) of the PC that has the JBM software and transferred configuration file).
  4. Reset the Gateway for 25-30 seconds.
  5. Start up the ASYLOAD.EXE program from the Jbmgatew directory, by typing asyload 1; if you are using Comm 1 of your PC. After about one to two minutes, BootP requests will be sent out of the Ethernet PortCyou will notice this by the T light flashing at increments twice as long as the flash previous. Then the Gateway will switch over to the serial port on its own. At this point, you should see the Jbmgw50.cfg being transferred to the Gateway (RD and TD lights flash quickly). You will also get a message confirming this (100% Transfer Complete, Hit ESC to end).

Loading Applications:

  1. Extract the JBMGW50.BIN from the JG5040##.EXE that was provided on the JBM Configurator diskette or by your JBM Customer Representative.
  2. Hold in the reset button while powering the Gateway on. This is a clean or full reset.
  3. After performing the full reset, the ASYLOAD.EXE Program will search for the new JBMGW50.BIN. Once the application has been loaded, about three minutes, the program will start loading the configuration file that was last transferred as JBMGW50.CFG.

Troubleshooting

The Gateway is not loading or cannot be communicated with. If the T light begins to flash every five seconds; continuously resetting itself; it is usually the result of loading an invalid or incomplete configuration onto the Gateway. If this happens; the Gateway will require a clean or full reset of both the configuration and application; erasing the two files from the Gateway's ROM Memory. This can be achieved by powering on the Gateway while holding in the reset button.

At this point, a Telnet session with the Gateway will not be possible, so an application must be forced into the Gateway's memory. After a full reset, the BootP/TFTP will automatically reissue download requests for the application and configuration. Note: Before attempting this procedure, please contact us.

Connecting the Gateway to the Network

Once you have the configuration loaded onto the Gateway, DTE adapter usage on the Gateway=s serial port will depend on the remote serial connection such as a Modem or other device providing clocking.

  1. Connect the 10BaseT connector to the Ethernet port.
  2. Try "PINGing" the IP Address that you assigned to the Gateway (i.e. the Unit IP Address) in the Remote Access Information of the configuration.
  3. Telnet to the same IP address.
  4. Connect the serial cable to the RS-232C port.
  5. Cable Adapter Usage:
  6. Gateway 50, 60, 70, 75 or 100 provides a DCE interface for connection to a terminal. If the port will be connected to a modem, then the DTE Adapter (JBM Electronics part number G50-Adapter) must be used.

Gateway 80 or 100 WAN Port provides a DTE interface for connection to a modem. If the port will be connected to DTE or a non-clock providing device, then the DCE adapter (JBM Electronics part number G1000-FR/DCE)

The adapter wire list is in the Technical Information Section of the manual or here.
