Address Routing
The Gateways (in this example, a Gateway 1000)
will route the data based on the incoming address. In this diagram, the Gateway emulates a terminal
to the IBM system, a host to the remote devices and a client to the IP Server. Data from the ATMs
will be converted to TCP/IP and transmitted to the Server. Data from the 3270 terminal will be
sent to the IBM host.
The Gateway can convert the addresses
on the Serial link. The Gateway can poll several control units (separate PUs) and convert
the addresses so the host would only have to poll a single PU with many LUs. This capability
can reduce host overhead and minimize network changes.
In this example, the Gateway acts as a
front-end to two different networks: the Legacy Serial and newer IP. This ability provides
a significant migration path for network conversions. All of the multiport Gateways have the
necessary software to perform this routing and conversion. Depending on the Gateway, the data
streams can be any combination of LAN, WAN and Serial.
