The Gateway (in this example, a Gateway 800) provides the following functions:

• Host emulation for the ATM
• Conversion of the data to TCP/IP
• Encapsulation of the TCP/IP data in Frame Relay
• Transmission of the data to the network through an integrated 56 KB DSU.

The conversion to TCP/IP at the edge can eliminate serial ports at the host and provide better control and routing for the Frame network. The DSU portion of the G800 replaces an external DSU, providing a single box conversion for the ATM.

The central site unit (another Gateway or a router) converts the data back to TCP/IP for processing by the server. The G800 provides a low-cost method for converting ATMs to a modern networking environment.
